NEWSletter Vol.2 The IATSS Forum Kyoto Study Tour

iatssIATSS Forum, based in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture was established to develop human resources in ASEAN countries by Mr. Soichiro Honda and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who was prime minister of Malaysia at the time. Since the first forum was held in 1985, it has been continued to be held for the last 31 years. Many promising youth who play important roles in ASEAN countries apply and each time 18 delegates who have passed examinations and screenings are chosen to participate in a two-month long study program in Japan.

Starting with the 54th study tour, Kyoto Convention & Visitors Bureau (KCVB) has been offering support and help with arranging the itinerary in Kyoto. In this study tour, the delegates learned about what Kyoto citizens, companies and local government are doing to protect traditional Japanese style townhouses and other parts of our scenery, and how the traditional culture and modern things can fit together. Participants visited the workshops of local artisans in Kyoto where tradition has been passed on from generation to generation for over 1000 years and experienced traditional handicrafts to teach them about sustainable policies so that they can then apply what they learned in their home countries.

A “GENIUS TABLE” was organized by Kyoto University students to provide a chance for Kyoto citizens and the overseas visitors to gather together and communicate. IATSS Forum organized a “GENIUS TABLE NIGHT” that was held at MTRL Kyoto. The three hour long program was a success – delegates and participants talked with each other on the given themes, such as TV shows, games, music and fashion. It is hoped that this exchange will foster good relations and mutual development.

KCVB offers complimentary consulting, advice and suggestions on programs and itineraries for the meetings and incentive tours. If you have any projects or groups who are considering to bring to Kyoto for meetings and/or events, please feel free to contact us. (kyoto@hellokcb.or.jp)
